Ministry of Care
Ministries of Care
The purpose of this ministry is to assist parishioners in maintaining both physical and mental good health. We help parishioners find appropriate services, when needed. The coordinator and volunteers who work in this ministry have varied responsibilities.
They are: office support, nurses who conduct our Blood Pressure Clinic, visits to the homebound, workers that prepare the refreshments for Game Day, volunteers for respite (those giving time out for shopping or personal needs of the caregiver in a home), drivers for Christmas dinner delivery, and many non-medical needs required by our parishioners.
Our Ministries of Care Office has an extensive library of brochures and information about the health needs of our community. On our parish staff is a Health and Wellness Coordinator, who stays informed about different agencies a person may require, such as, in home care, assisted living facilities, and care homes. She also communicates with care facilities and hospitals, when we have a parishioner in their care. The Legion of Mary is of great assistance to this ministry, by taking the Eucharist to those who are homebound. A prayer commissioning has been established as part of this ministry, for those who can not (for many reasons) do other ministries. This special group of parishioners prays for those prayer needs brought forward in a basket at mass, as well as, all the needs of our parish family. This group is called “Prayer Partners”. The “ Prayer Line” carried out by the Ladies Guild is active and does a great job in their mission, with approximately 80 volunteers, who receive calls by telephone for those in need of prayer.
AED and CPR training is arranged by this office and a record of all personnel and volunteers who have taken the training is filed and kept in the Health Office. We strongly encourage all parishioners to take AED and CPR training. We have two Defibrillators on our premises. One is in the main church and the other in the social hall. It is required by the Diocese of Phoenix that all parish staff and volunteers take the “Call to Protect” class. The Co-Coordinators of “Called to Protect” keep in communication with the Health & Wellness Office and house their records there.
For driving needs, parishioners are referred to many support agencies that do this service. Our volunteers do not have the training or qualifications for picking up and delivering our parishioners. We maintain files on the agencies that do driving for those with this need. We also assist our parish members, who need assistance finding in a cleaning service, an in home caregiver, meal preparation, and many other needs a person might have due to a medical condition.
Game Day is on the first Wednesday of the month from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. At Game Day we play an assortment of games: bingo, poker, and all requests that we have or can obtain. We celebrate Birthdays for that Month; have Door Prizes and volunteers serve drinks and refreshments. All this adds up to an afternoon of entertainment and uplifting of our spirits.
We have a group of professional medical personnel who form our Parish Health Care Cabinet. They meet monthly to help us stay abreast of the needs of our community and our world today. These individuals are appointed by the Pastor and Health & Wellness Coordinator. Most of them volunteer for one or more of our groups. Our policy is that if we are not able to give you immediate assistance, it is because we are serving the needs of others. If we are serving others in the parish, we are serving you as well.
Our symbol is the “Sunflower” and the phrase stated by St Julie founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame, “As the sunflower follows the sun, so must we follow our Lord.”
